Machine Techniques

Brief background and expected outcome
As an essential for the program, each student is required to know the basic use of the Industrial Sewing Machine as they progress on to mastery. Accordingly this course is designed to introduce students to the machine by teaching them the different parts of machine and how to use it properly, the maintenance and dangers associated with it.

Students will be taught how to operate or tend the sewing machine to perform garment-sewing operations, such as joining, reinforcing, or decorating garments or garment parts.

At the end of this course, students will be able to; turn knobs, screws, and dials to adjust settings of machine, according to garment style and observation of operation, guide garment or garment parts under machine needle and presser foot to sew parts together, sew replacement parts or missing stitches, according to repair tickets, replace sewing machine parts and performs basic maintenance, such as oiling machine.

Students in addition will learn how to draw markings or pins applique on fabric to obtain variation in design and marks stitching errors with pins or tape, baste edges of material to align and temporarily secure garment parts for final assembly, select supplies, such as fasteners and thread, according to specifications or characteristics of fabric, remove holding devices and finished item from machine, attach tape, trim, or elastic to specified garments or garment parts, according to item specifications, fold or stretch edges or length of items, while sewing, to facilitate forming specified sections. At the end of the course, students will acquire the skills of operating and controlling the machine
