Garment Construction

Brief background and expected outcome

This course is designed to help students identify the necessities of sewing, basic construction techniques, hems and other edge finishes and fastening. Students will be equipped with the skill of making apparel by learning how to; construct various stitches and to cut out patterns to construct apparel.

Students will learn hand sewing and finishing, body measurements, pattern use, fabric layout and cutting as well as machine operation. Student will be taught how to construct Silhouette, Sleeve Variations (Puff, Bell, Cape, Petal) Skirt Variation (A line, Flared, gathered, skirt with flounce and fitted) and pattern alterations.

An understanding of industrial machinery; thread type; needle type; seam classifications; stitch classifications and their suitability to fabric choices for a ‘fit for purpose’ outcome will be developed. This knowledge and understanding will be applied in a variety of industrial garment construction techniques in practical classes. In addition this course will examines relevant quality issues within the fashion industry.

This course will adopt practical hands on approach to teach students the construction of household textiles, ladies, children and men’s wear.
